I would think that Gardner, MA was well known for manufacturing chairs. A solid family means that he had a stable upbringing, with a father that worked hard to support his family, and parents that got along well.

If you can’t understand that then you need more schooling. I get 2 points but seriously nothing in that statement needs to be expanded on. It is all basic American English and easily understood.

"chair capital" — I think he means that there are a lot of chair factories in Gardner. Like, Hollywood is the entertainment capital of the world, and Paris is the fashion capital of the world. (But he probably meant it humorously.)
"solid family" — No divorce, his parents disciplined him when necessary, for the most part the family had dinner together, mom and dad always made time for him. Those times are long gone, I fear.

In my opinion a "solid family" means a family with a good understanding for one another who rarely have major problems and if so can work them out in a loving manner. Also, finances may not be a big worry.
